Report from our Plant Sale Committee Chair, Mary Ellen Murphy
What are some trends you are seeing in container gardening this season?
Although mixed plantings in containers are still leading in ornamental plant displays, I am seeing a trend to single plant variety container groupings. Container groups should be made of the same or similar material in like colors. Varying the container heights creates the desired drama. Color choices are very personal but the collection should be in harmony, either blending or contrasting. Remember green and white are colors too.

‘Balcon Shocking Pink’

What are some of the plants you are most excited about this year?
Begonia ‘Jurassic Pink’ is one of my favorites. Planted alone, it is not only strikingly beautiful, I have been able to overwinter the pots indoors. In a semi-shaded location, it flourishes all season outdoors. As the season ends bring the single plant container inside to an indirect light location away from direct heat and cool breezes. There will be a decline but as the daylight lengthens it will begin to pop back and be ready to take the spotlight for another outdoor season.
I am very excited about Pelargonium ‘Balcon Shocking Pink’. This ivy geranium was suggested by one of our FOPCON Board Members. Shown as a stand-alone in hanging baskets and window boxes this new variety will be a show stopper. It is heat tolerant and self-cleaning, looking fresh all summer, presenting volumes of bright color.
Ageratum ‘Monarch Magic’ has a vigorous spreading habit, is drought tolerant, and a butterfly magnet. The blooms provide the Monarch with a landing pad on their umbel-shaped blooms. Plant a few in a large single container in bright sun to attract this delicate insect. Containers scattered throughout the garden offer bright spots for the Monarch to find nectar as their food source.
