How to Create a Hot & Sunny Planter

We asked Plant Sale Committee Member Janice Roberts for her expert suggestions for a 22-24” planter.

Here is what you will need to create a Hot & Sunny Planter.

Filler using plants from the Plant Sale:

2  Osteospermum, ‘Serenity Bronze’

2  Petchoa, ‘Caliburst Yellow’

2  Euphobia, ‘Diamond Snow’

1 Thriller*, such as

Dwarf Papyrus, ‘Queen Tut’ , 24” tall or

Cordyline australis, ‘Red Star’ or ‘Red Sensation” approx. 36-40” tall

*To be found at local nurseries.

Steps for Planting:

If using a potting medium with fertilizer, no need to add more. Otherwise, use slow-release fertilizer or add a liquid starter fertilizer when watering.

Choose a planter with good drainage, then fill it with fresh potting medium about two-thirds way full.

Plant the “thriller” in the center of the planter.

Place each Osteospermum 90 degrees from each other at the outer edge of the planter.

Place each Petchoa, at the outer edge of the planter, 90 degrees from each other.

Do the same with the 2 Euphobia.

When each is spaced equally around the center, plant all. Gently firm soil around plants, then slowly soak with water until the soil has settled.
