George, our ever popular parrot, is a Yellow-Headed Amazon Parrot (Amazona oratrix).
Amazon parrots are very smart: they can solve problems and even figure out how to open the latch on their cages! The birds are quite talkative — just listen to George. Many love to sing as well.
Habitat
The stocky short tailed parrots (15 – 17 inches in length) are native to Mexico and Central America. In the wild they live in mangrove forests or evergreen woods near rivers and nest in holes in trees.
As pets
Yellow-headed Amazon parrots have been kept as caged pets for centuries. They are a fun pet but need lots of attention and activity to prevent them from becoming bored and destructive. Like many parrots, the Amazon parrot can live to be 50 to 70 years old.
